Four generations. One address. The same Sunday gravy since 1919.
Mario's Restaurant has been at 2342 Arthur Avenue in the Bronx since 1919. It opened when the Italian immigrant neighborhood was at its peak, and it has stayed through everything that came after.
The menu is classic Italian-American — the food that Italian immigrants cooked in New York, adapted to what was available and what their families loved. Veal dishes, Sunday gravy slow-cooked all morning, fresh clams in white wine. Nothing here is reinvented. Nothing needs to be.
Four generations of the same family have run this restaurant. The recipes have passed from hands to hands. Arthur Avenue has changed around it. Mario's has not.
